**PART 2**

Two days later, Adrian walked into the private dining room at Le Jardin for the final wedding lunch planning session and froze mid-step.

On his chair sat a single cream-colored envelope with his name written in elegant gold script. Next to it lay a thick stack of documents and a small black velvet box.

He laughed nervously as he approached the table. “What’s this? Some kind of surprise, Mara?”

I sat calmly at the head of the table in a tailored white suit, my engagement ring noticeably absent from my finger. His mother Vivienne and sister Camille were already seated, looking confused.

Adrian picked up the envelope and opened it. His smile faded as he read the first line.

“Termination of Engagement Agreement.”

His hands began to shake as he flipped through the pages. Every vendor contract had been canceled. Every deposit refunded — to my accounts. The guest list had been revised. My name was gone from everything. His name now appeared alone on what remained of the canceled wedding.

“What the hell is this?” he demanded, his voice rising.

I leaned back and spoke softly, “You told me not to call you my future husband. So I took you seriously.”

Camille reached for the papers, but I slid them away.

“I removed my name from every guest list, every contract, every reservation you created using my connections and my money,” I continued. “The penthouse you’ve been living in? The lease is now in your name only. Good luck paying three months in advance.”

Adrian’s face turned red. “You can’t do this. We’re engaged!”

“We were,” I corrected. “Until you reminded me that I was just a stepping stone for your ambitions.”

Vivienne slammed her hand on the table. “This is outrageous! After everything we’ve done for you—”

“You’ve done nothing but take,” I said sharply, turning to her. “While I’ve spent the last year funding your son’s failing company, paying for your country club membership, and financing a wedding you all treated as your personal social event.”

Adrian opened the velvet box. Inside was the engagement ring he had given me — the one I had paid for.

“Keep it,” I said. “Sell it. You’ll need the money once my father’s firm calls in the bridge loan next week.”

The color drained from his face. “Mara… please. I didn’t mean it like that.”

“You meant every word,” I replied, standing up. “And now you’ll live with the consequences.”

As I walked toward the door, Adrian called after me desperately, “I love you!”

I paused at the entrance and looked back one last time.

“No, Adrian. You loved what I could give you. There’s a difference.”

I stepped out into the bright afternoon sun, feeling lighter than I had in months. Behind me, I heard Vivienne scolding her son and Camille already on the phone trying to salvage their reputation.

For the first time in our relationship, I wasn’t the one chasing validation.

I was finally free.
